Distinguished Professor Dr. Atsuhiko Isobe is a leading physical oceanographer at the Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, Kyushu University, Japan. His research focuses on coastal and shelf ocean dynamics, with internationally recognised contributions to understanding the transport, distribution, and environmental risk of marine plastic debris and microplastics.

He has led numerous major national and international research projects on ocean plastic pollution and received prestigious awards, including the Prime Minister’s Prize of Japan for ocean microplastic research. Professor Isobe’s work integrates field observations and numerical modelling to advance global understanding of marine debris circulation and its long-term environmental implications.
